Battery cells, the main component of electric vehicles in India, have to be imported from various countries including China. However, the quality of these battery cells has been questioned at times. But this time, India has taken a step towards self-reliance in this cell production as well. Country's largest e-scooter company Ola Electric has unveiled the Made-in-India “Bharat” battery cell. It is a 4680 cell made in indigenous technology.
Ola Electric claims that they have taken more than 70 patents while developing this battery cell. Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of the company, said, “We have not imported this technology, we have developed it ourselves. The performance of this Bharat battery cell is amazing. It offers five times more energy density than the 2170 cells used in Ola's current electric scooters.
Also, Ola's new battery cell offers 1.5 times faster charging and 10 percent more range. In other words, this new cell is capable of holding charge for a long time rather than being charged quickly. These battery cells are expected to be used in the company's two-wheeler electric vehicles from 2025 onwards. Ola Bharat Battery Cell could usher in a new horizon in India's electric vehicle industry.
Incidentally, on the 15th of August, the company always makes surprising announcements about its products and technologies. Three years ago on this day, they launched the first e-scooter. After unveiling Bharat Battery Cell today, Ola will bring out its first production electric motorcycle.
