The Sony Xperia series of smartphones known for their awesome cameras isn’t stopping just yet

There are speculations that Sony has decided to discontinue the Xperia 5 series of smartphones known for their stellar cameras. A Chinese tipster recently also wrote “Xperia 5 series, RIP 2024” in a social media post, indicating that no more phones from this series will hit the market. But he did not give any other reason or evidence to support his claim. But now the live images of the protective case of the upcoming Sony Xperia 5 VI phone have come to the fore, which not only hints at its design, but also confirms that the Japanese company is indeed working on the model and the phone could hit the market in the near future.

The leak is a live image of the Xperia 5 VI protective case

A Chinese tipster shared photos of protective cases for the Sony Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 5 VI, which were being sold on an online marketplace in China. Notably, there is no cutout for the dedicated two-stage camera shutter button on the bottom right of the Sony Xperia 5 VI’s case. If there is nothing wrong with the case, it is assumed that the new phone will not have this button. Additionally, the Xperia 5 VI’s case features the same cutout for the camera as last year’s model, featuring dual cameras with primary and ultrawide lenses.

As for the predecessor Sony Xperia 5V, it features a 48-megapixel 24mm 1/1.35-inch primary sensor and a 12-megapixel 16mm 1/1.25-inch sensor for wide-angle shots. Notably, most models in the Xperia 5 series, including the first Xperia 5 launched in 2019, had a telephoto sensor.

Notably, another notable change to the Sony Xperia 5 VI will likely be the revamped aspect ratio. An earlier report claimed that Sony will move away from the iconic 21:9 aspect ratio to a 19.5:9 aspect ratio in its new smartphone models. All Xperia 5 series devices have so far featured tall OLED (OLED) display panels with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,560 pixels, which is expected to finally change with the new Sony Xperia 5 VI. Sony probably made this decision to make the phone a bit more accessible for one-handed use and appeal to a wider audience.
