Leica Leitz Phone: DSLR-like camera on mobile! Leica came with a rugged phone

German company Leica is famous for manufacturing high-end cameras and lenses. Big companies like Xiaomi use lenses made by Leica in their phones. But Leica also launches its own smartphone with Leitz Phone-branding. The company launched the Leica Leitz Phone 2 last November. And now they have announced the launch of Leitz Phone 3 as the successor of the phone. The Leitz Phone series is a joint effort between Leica, Sharp and SoftBank. The specialty of the phone is imaging power and Leica camera mode. Let’s take a look at the specifications and features of Leitz Phone 3.

Leica Leitz Phone 3: Specifications and Features

The Leica Leitz Phone 3 features a 6.6-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,730 x 1,260, which supports a 240 Hz refresh rate and 2,000 nits peak brightness. The phone’s body has a premium polycarbonate texture, giving it a Leica camera-like feel. The weight of the phone is 209 grams.

In terms of camera system, Leica Leitz Phone 3 resembles its predecessor Leitz Phone 2. It also has the same 47.2-megapixel 1-inch sensor, which offers the “Eight Phase Detection Autofocus” function. According to Leica, the sensor offers fast and accurate focusing and superior image quality even in challenging conditions such as low light. The main camera comes with a focal length of 19mm, which is between the main and ultrawide lenses of most mainstream smartphones like the Galaxy S24 Ultra. For selfies, the phone has a 12.6-megapixel sensor on the front, which offers a wide viewing angle of 78 degrees and an f/2.3 aperture.

The report notes that the image quality of this Leica phone has improved mainly in three areas – more accurate representation of light spots (both in terms of shape and color), more refined object segmentation and better Leica color simulation. The phone has added “Vivid” and “Enhanced” Leica tints, which capture more vibrant and contrast-rich images.

A special feature of the Leica Leitz Phone 3 is the “Leica Perspective Control”, previously only available on Leica cameras. Also, this phone’s camera system measures the camera’s tilt while shooting and then creates accurate images through software processing. Also, users will see “Leica Style” and “Leica Tone” in the camera app. One of these enables the user to apply various classic lens aperture effects to photos.

In terms of performance, the Leica Leitz Phone 3 has Qualcomm’s last year’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which, while lagging behind this year’s flagship phone, is still very capable and helps the phone with image processing as well. It comes with 512 GB storage and supports up to 1 TB memory card. The price of Leica’s new phone, however, is not yet known. It will be available only in Japan from April 19, the company said.
