Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Google RCS are about to wake up. As reported by Economic Times, Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea i.e. Vi have applied to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to introduce new rules for these messaging apps. Telecom companies have demanded mandatory licensing of OTT apps to provide services like mobile operators. However, various OTT apps have opposed this, saying they are providing their services under the Information Technology Act.

Opposition to OTT app

After lengthy discussions with TRAI, Airtel said, “OTT services and applications have increased manifold. Due to various barriers and absence of broadband connectivity, their prevalence has become global. Without naming any specific app, the report said, OTT companies have become an alternative to text and voice services of telecom operators.

Emphasis on changing the telecom licensing system

According to reports, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea have pushed for changes in the existing telecom licensing system. They also supported TRAI's proposal to introduce one license across India – Unified Services Authorization (National).

It may be noted that the proposal for an all India license may be the first necessary and major change in the licensing system since 1994 till date i.e. in 30 years. It will make business easier, rules and regulations will be simplified and costs will also be reduced.
