DMRC’s new initiative is QR-based paper ticket

DMRC has now introduced new paper tickets with QR codes instead of plastic-based tokens, which have been made available at ticket counters from May 8. These new tickets are aimed at reducing the manual process required for issuing tickets. DMRC already has ticket vending machines at stations and soon all DMRC stations will support the new QR-based paper tickets. It will also be distributed through vending machines.

DMRC is offering paper tickets through station counters and customer care counters. Stations have been upgraded to support paper tickets. According to the DMRC website, a new terminal has been set up at the gate for entry and exit. By the end of June, all AFC points will support the new QR-based paper ticket. Besides this, Delhi Metro will also bring mobile-based QR ticketing for commuters by the end of this month.

How does the QR based Delhi Metro paper ticket work?

DMRC has issued guidelines for QR based paper tickets. For how long they can be used at metro stations and what are the conditions of its use:

  • According to DMRC, this ticket can be used for entry at the metro station from where the rider gets the QR-based paper ticket. That is, you cannot enter from any other station using paper ticket.
  • DMRC says that it is necessary to enter the station for 60 minutes after the QR-based ticket is issued, which means that the passengers have 60 minutes to use the QR-based paper ticket. If passengers fail to enter the station within 60 minutes, then the paper ticket will be invalid and they will not be able to enter the station or get a refund for this ticket.
  • At present, DMRC is offering QR-based paper tickets for specific stations only.
  • Delhi Metro also says that if a passenger exits before his destination station, he will have to be issued a free exit ticket, as the QR-based paper ticket will not work at the AFC gate. Similarly, if one travels beyond his last station, he will have to pay extra fare and also take an evacuation ticket. Only after this will you be able to get out of the station.
  • DMRC has warned that you cannot use the photo of a paper ticket on your phone to enter/exit the station. If anyone is found using such copies, the rider will be treated as without a valid ticket and will be penalised.
