iPhone SE 2020 is now assembled in India, import duty cut down up to 20 percent: Report


iPhone SE 2020 is now officially assembled in India. The local manufacturing of the iPhone SE (2020) will start at a Wistron facility in Karnataka soon. Apart from the iPhone SE (2020), the Cupertino giant is also starting the production of five more iPhone models domestically in the country that includes the last year’s iPhone 11 as well.



Apple has begun the production of iPhone SE 2020 in the country. According to reports, the assembling process of the device will start at the Wistron facility in Karnataka soon. This step would help Apple to avoid an import duty of 20 percent that mobile phone manufacturers need to pay for importing their models from global markets in India.


According to Gadget 360 report, Apple said: “iPhone SE 2020 packs our most powerful chip into our most popular size at our most affordable price and we’re excited to be making it in India for our local customers.”


Earlier this month, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad unveiled that Apple’s contract manufacturers Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron had applied for a $6.64 billion (around Rs. 49,242 crores) scheme under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) plan. Both of the companion Foxconn and Wistron are already producing iPhone models locally in the country, while Pegatron also has plans to kick off its local operations in South India at the end of the year.


Apple unveiled the second generation of iPhone SE in April, The smartphone is powered by Apple’s A13 chipset which is also available on the iPhone 11 series. the new iPhone SE equips with a 12-megapixel rear camera and packs in a chassis that looks very similar to the iPhone 8. The base variant of the smartphone carries a price tag of Rs. 42,500 for 64GB storage variant, the mid variant of 128GB costs Rs.47,800, and the high end variant of 256GB storage costs 58,300.


However, Apple has not confirmed when they would start selling locally manufactured iPhone SE 2020 units in India. It is believed that fresh stock with an “Assembled in India” label is likely to hit stores in the country in the coming weeks.
