India to lead world in 6G network, forming Bharat 6G Alliance

Union Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Shri Ashwini Vaishnab announced the formation of Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) to drive India’s technological advancement in the telecom sector at an event recently in the presence of Minister of State Shri Debusingh Chouhan. This collaborative platform aims to deploy and develop 6G technology in public and private companies, academia, research centers and standards development organizations in India.

Introduction to Bharat 6G Alliance

At the event, Ashwini Vaishnav pledged to provide universal and affordable connectivity, encourage indigenous technology, build a robust telecom and semiconductor manufacturing eco-system. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aim is to make India a leader in 6G technology by forming this B6GA.

Notably, B6GA will act as a catalyst for collaboration and knowledge exchange. It will also build alliances and synergies with other 6G global alliances. And this international collaboration will help India stay ahead in 6G innovation and technology development.

Allocation of funds for 6G technology projects

To help advance 6G technology, the government has allocated a grant of Rs 240.51 crore through the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF). This funding will be used for two important projects. Namely, Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) and Multiplexing and 6G THz Testbed, Advanced Optical Communication Testbed.

The 6G THz Testbed Project, undertaken by SAMEER, a consortium comprising IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Patna, aims to explore the potential of 6G technology using terahertz frequencies and advanced multiplexing techniques. This research will pave the way for the development of cutting-edge 6G applications and services.

The Advanced Optical Communication Test Bed Project, in collaboration with IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi, and other industry players, will develop an advanced test bed for optical communication technology. This initiative will revolutionize areas and healthcare services like telemedicine and telesurgery in India.
