Will Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra beat the iPhone 15 series in camera? What is going to get upgraded

Samsung is reportedly working on its next-generation flagship Galaxy S-series smartphones. The lineup will include three models – the standard Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra. These phones are expected to come with several upgrades over their predecessors. However, the top-end Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra’s camera specifications may disappoint Samsung fans. It is expected to have the same 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP2 sensor as its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, while the improved specs are expected. Although it is the highest resolution sensor available in the market. However, it doesn’t excel at the size of the sensor, which sometimes results in issues like high noise in the dark parts of the image. While the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is rumored to use a larger sensor, recent reports indicate that Samsung has no plans to upgrade the camera sensor in the next two years.

Samsung plans for Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra camera sensors

According to a tweet by famous tipster Ice Universe (which has now been deleted), the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra – as well as its successor, the S25 Ultra – are both expected to feature the same 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP2 sensor as the main camera. It is also reported that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will have an upgraded 5x telephoto camera, but the 3x telephoto camera may remain unchanged. And a possible upgrade to a 10x telephoto camera might satisfy photography enthusiasts somewhat.

According to a report by Dutch publication GalaxyClub, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 lineup won’t get any hardware upgrades for their selfie cameras either. These are expected to offer the same 12-megapixel front-facing camera used in the previous S23 lineup.

Again according to SamMobile, Samsung’s move to use the same camera sensor across all three generations of S-series phones was previously seen with the S20 Ultra, S21 Ultra and S22 Ultra models. All of these offer a 108-megapixel camera sensor. However, this consistency could put Samsung at a disadvantage, especially when its rivals are trying to upgrade the cameras of their flagship models every year.

Notably, Samsung’s arch-rival Apple is expected to include Sony’s 1/1.14-inch 48-megapixel camera sensor in its upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, the performance of this new sensor is said to be on par with the 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor used by Chinese companies like Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi. If this information is correct, Samsung may fall behind not only Chinese competitors in terms of camera specifications, but also international competitors like Apple. And such situation is not positive for Samsung in terms of imaging.

Despite possible flaws in the camera department, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra model’s display will support 144Hz refresh rate. Also, it is said to use innovative stacked battery technology inspired by electric vehicles (EV). Again, Samsung is likely to include their in-house Exynos chipset in the upcoming Galaxy S24 series, which could reduce the brand’s production costs.
