Ten years after Redmi’s first smartphone, this feature took the market by storm

Xiaomi is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its budget smartphone sub-brand Redmi today. On Chinese microblogging website Weibo, Xiaomi General Manager Wang Hua said that the first smartphone under the Redmi branding was announced 10 years ago today, on July 31, 2013. A decade ago, a special event was organized by the organization. Where several executive officers participated. Besides, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun and some Chinese mobile executives were also present at the launch event.

According to Wang Hua, information has emerged that projectors were not used in unveiling or detailing the features of the ‘Hongmi’ or ‘Redmi 1’ devices at that time as now. Basically as part of the promotion the brand showcased their first handset to a few media groups.

While Redmi may not host the launch event with much fanfare, the Hongmi or Redmi 1 smartphone delivered a ‘record breaking’ sales performance immediately after its home-market debut. After all, the company managed to instill the belief among Chinese residents that it is possible to get a great feature phone for less than 1000 yuan (roughly Rs. 11,400 in Indian prices).

It uses a quad core MediaTek MT6589T processor. The device supports 3G networking and runs on Android 4.2 based MIUI 5 custom skin. This phone offers 1 GB RAM and 4 GB storage. As for the camera department, the handset has an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3-megapixel selfie shooter on the front. And for power backup, the Redmi 1 phone has a 2,000 mAh capacity battery.
