Over time, mobile handsets have changed in both shape and form. Early humans were familiar with cell phones with calculator-like designs and 15 or more switches. But with the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, keypads disappeared from phones and gradually replaced touchscreens. After that, the touch screen changed a little more and started the generation of smartphones. But here the hunger of the market to experiment or do something new is not satisfied. We’ve already seen voice assistant features, heard of researchers working on transparent phones – and recently Motorola came up with the concept of a bendable smartphone that can be worn as a watch on the wrist. But now the Chinese technology company Honor has introduced a new AI feature, which will allow the phone to be controlled at will with just an eye gesture. Yes, you read that right, no need to touch the phone screen, but in the near future it can be used with the eyes! Honor’s special technology is called ‘Magic Capsule’ and it will work based on eye-tracking.
The phone will understand the need by looking at the user’s eyes
Honor said that through its artificial intelligence or artificial intelligence (AI) based eye-tracking technology, the phone will automatically understand where the user is looking on the screen. In this case, if you want to open an app or click somewhere, it will work only if you look at that place for a while. But how? In fact, the new Magic Capsule technology will use the selfie camera to track the user’s eye movements and detect where he is looking on the screen. However, the user needs to set the eye-movements correctly, otherwise they will take it as a command just by looking at the screen. Incidentally, the Honor company has already made everything from voice commands to hand gestures a part of its phones. But this new addition of theirs is going to create more surprises.
The technology brand claims that its Magic Capsule will easily detect where the user is looking on the phone screen from a distance of 20 to 50 cm. In this case, to open any app or home screen, it takes about 1.8 seconds. With this, smartphone users can receive calls, open text messages and even turn off timers if they can’t use their hands on the screen for some reason.
What do the experts say?
Magic capsule technology may become a part of premium smartphones in the coming days. However, experts have mixed opinions about Honor’s technology. Some believe that AI will make it easier to make it part of smartphones. But others emphasize user privacy and claim that the user will always be under surveillance while using the phone with this feature and it could lead to the theft of his facial data.
