TRAI has stepped up to keep consumers safe and protect them from various scams. So they are issuing various rules and regulations against the telecom operators as well. Recently the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India i.e. TRAI has revised the rules regarding mobile number portability. TRAI last amended its rules in 2009. Again this year the rules have been revised.
According to the organization, a total of 9 new rules have been added this time. According to the ninth rule, telecom customers who have recently swapped their SIM cards will not be able to port to another network soon.
Besides, TRAI has said that after swapping from one network to another network, you have to use that network for at least 7 days. Only then porting to another network will be possible. Because Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) cannot generate UPC (Unique Porting Code) for that SIM if the SIM is not used for 7 days. This leads to multiple problems like spam and fraud.
Therefore, this amendment has been specifically implemented to protect consumers from spam and fraud and to prevent SIM swapping fraud. Also, TRAI has taken this step to ensure that the relationship between telecom service providers and customers remains safe and peaceful.
These amended rules will prevent mobile number porting through fraudulent SIM swipes or fake documents, TRAI said. Also, this rule has been introduced as a new standard for sim porting. Hence henceforth UPC will not be allotted if requested before 7 days after SIM swap or mobile number replacement.
Keep in mind that usually users get a new SIM when their SIM card is lost or damaged. If the SIM card is lost or malfunctioning, users need to contact the nearest telecom operator’s service center to get the SIM swapped. Note, this must require a valid user ID.
