Today, the Ministry of Information Technology has banned 59 Chinese Apps from India. It has issued an order to Google and Apple to remove the banned application from their respective Indian App stores.

Why 59 Chinese Apps Banned by the Indian Government?

The Ministry said it was invoking its power under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, minister of law and justice of India tweets “For safety, security, defense, sovereignty & integrity of India and to protect data & privacy of people of India the Government has banned 59 Chinese apps“.

The ministry has said “There have been raging concerns on aspects relating to data security and safeguarding the privacy of 130 crore Indians. It has been noted recently that such concerns also pose a threat to sovereignty and security of our country”.

“The Ministry of Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about the misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, it’s mining, and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defense of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” they added.

Order to Google, Apple

“Upon receiving recent credible inputs that such Chinese apps possess a threat to sovereignty and integrity of India, the Government of India has decided to disallow the usage … both [on] mobile and non-mobile Internet-enabled devices,” the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) said in a statement.

According to sources, Meity has issued instructions to Google and Apple to remove the banned applications from their respective application stores. Additionally, telecom operators and Internet service providers will be asked to block access and use of these applications on their networks. Banning these 59 Chinese apps is necessary as recommended by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
