Tata Play removed the channel from the subscription plan to reduce the cost of the customers. It's all arbitrary, says Sony.
To keep entertainment details at their fingertips, most people rely on TV and DTH services these days too. But if you are also in this group, especially if you are a Tata Play subscriber, then today we have big news for you. Tata Play, one of the leading television service providers in the country, recently decided to remove all TV channels of Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) from the service plans of around 1 crore people.
Harit Nagpal, managing director and CEO of the company told the media that the company made the move effective for 1 million customers yesterday i.e. Thursday. The remaining work will be completed in the next 10 days.
Why did Tata suddenly take this big step?
Nagpal, a Tata official, said based on viewership data that while 40-50 percent of Tata Play customers subscribe to Sony channels with plans, only 25 percent watch them. Meanwhile, without return path data, it's challenging to identify the 75% of customers who pay but don't watch channels. But they think that less than a quarter of these customers should save money.
Being a customer centric company, Tata Play has decided to remove these channels from the plan to reduce the monthly DTH bill in the interest of the common man. There is also a strong possibility that their own revenue will decrease. However, those who want to watch Sony channels, need not despair. These customers can re-subscribe to the plan by contacting the company through the app or call center or by sending a text message. It will provide instant service.
Sony has fired cannon against Tata
Meanwhile, in response to media queries, a SPNI spokesperson claimed that they were not informed about the operator's decision to remove the Sony channel from the plans of around 1 crore Play customers. Moreover, the claim of low viewership of Tata Play is misleading and they feel that this decision has been taken without considering people's likes and dislikes. The whole thing is arbitrary and vindictive in Sony's eyes.
Although this is not the first time Tata Play has taken such a decision, earlier in March 2022 they had voluntarily downgraded the subscription plans of almost half of the customers. But this time the company has targeted specific broadcasters.
