Snapdragon Vulnerabilities risks almost 1 Billion Android Users. Researchers said that this major flaw directly impacts the DSP (Digital signal processing) function of the Snapdragon processor which exploits to install malicious apps on target devices without user permissions which can be used to steal user data, track user location or listen in to their surroundings.

DSP chips offer numerous tasks on smartphones, including image processing, charging, audio, video, AR, and other multimedia functions. The smartphone makers also use these chips to insert their own functionality that will run as dedicated applications on top of the existing Android framework. A number of leading smartphone sellers, including Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, and others, use Qualcomm Snapdragon chips in their devices. According to the CheckPoint report, over 40% of Android devices use Qualcomm chips. There are around 3 billion Android devices in the world that mean these DSP vulnerability risks over 1 billion Android Users.

The company has been notified of these Snapdragon Vulnerabilities, dubbed Achilles by Check Point, and the following CVEs are assigned to these bugs to track them: CVE-2020-11201, CVE-2020-11202, CVE-2020-11206, CVE-2020-11207, CVE-2020-11208, and CVE-2020-11209.

In an announcement, Qualcomm said: “Regarding the Qualcomm Computer DSP vulnerability disclosed by Check Point, we worked diligently to validate the issue and make appropriate mitigations available to OEMs. We have no evidence it is currently being exploited. We encourage end-users to update their devices as patches become available and to only install applications from trusted locations such as the Google Play Store”.

As per the report, the chipset maker is going to release the patches to fix all the vulnerability issues soon. However, Google and Qualcomm have not shared any information on when the patches will be released to the general public. There are almost billion of devices that are impacted by these bugs, it will not be easy for the patches to reach all devices easily.
