The world is moving towards eco-friendly cars for one reason, to reduce the amount of black smoke produced by petrol-diesel combustion and to control pollution. Electric vehicles or EVs are becoming popular as alternative fuel vehicles. Norway set a new record for the use of such vehicles.

Norway is the first country in the world to overtake petrol-powered cars in number of electric cars. A report by Norway's road federation says that of the 2.8 million private vehicles registered in the country, 7,54,383 are battery-powered models. And the number of petrol powered vehicles is 7,53,905. Diesel vehicles are the largest but sales are declining rapidly.

Norwegian Road Federation director Oyvind Solberg called the event historic, saying that such a milestone had been achieved a decade ago. Norway could become the first country in the world to overtake fossil fuel-powered vehicles in number of electric vehicles. By 2026, diesel cars could also be overtaken.

Despite being rich in oil and natural gas, Norway aims to make all vehicles sold environmentally friendly by 2025. As the market for hydrogen vehicles is negligible, this target is assumed to be about EVs. 94.3 percent of cars registered in Norway in August were electric.
