Many may not know, KTM unveiled their first electric bike in 2010. The Austrian company showcased an electric enduro bike called the Freeride E at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show that year. Although they later launched limited edition e-bikes, they were dirt bikes for racing competition. KTM has always distanced itself from street legal electric bikes. But now it seems that the opposite is going to happen next year.
KTM brings electric street bike
Speculations have started that KTM and its partner brand Husqvarna could launch a road legal electric motorcycle in 2025. According to a leaked document from America's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTCA), KTM and Husqvarna are expected to launch two e-bikes in 2025 called the 'Electric Freeride (Street Legal) and Electric Pioneer (Street Legal) respectively.
Both models are listed with a 5.54kW lithium ion battery. That is, it indicates the use of a 5.54 kW capacity lithium ion battery. Note that the 2022 Husqvarna E-Pylene, KTM E-Duke and Freeride ELV concept were also reported to have the same capacity battery pack. Each model is likely to have an electric powertrain.
KTM's entry into the electric street motorcycle market is going to be a big step. Now it remains to be seen what kind of e-bikes are coming. KTM stands for expensive premium bikes, the same is likely to apply to e-bikes. As a result, fans of the company are looking at how their strategy will be.
