The Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 was unveiled yesterday at IFA Berlin as a tri-foldable smartphone concept. As the name suggests, the handset seems to have a triple foldable screen using a dual-hinge mechanism. It was unveiled as a successor to the Tecno Phantom Ultimate model, a rollable concept unveiled by the company at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 event in Barcelona last February. While its new concept device has a compact candy bar form factor when folded, it will offer a massive tri-fold 10-inch inner display with minimal creases. However, Tecno has not confirmed whether it will launch this handset soon.
Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 Specifications
According to Tecno, the Phantom Ultimate 2 will have a 6.48-inch cover display and a huge 10-inch LTPO OLED screen with a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels. This display will offer a 4:3 aspect ratio. The company also claims that it is the first foldable device on the market to use Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI) technology, which houses both the display driver and the touch sensor on a single chip.
Besides, the Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 phone will be 11 millimeters slim despite having an extra folding screen. That means it will retain the same thickness as other book-style foldable smartphones on the market like the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (10.5mm). However, it is slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 phone. Samsung's device is 12.1 millimeters thick when folded.
The Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 also features a dual-hinge mechanism, which is said to have undergone tests involving 3,00,000 folds and unfolds. The smartphone also has an ultra-slim battery, which is just 0.25 mm wide.
Although the concept of the tri-fold handset has been showcased, Tecno has yet to confirm if and when the handset will go into production. Concept smartphones are usually released to highlight the company's manufacturing prowess and the technologies it has under development. However, another Chinese company, Huawei, is also rumored to launch a tri-foldable smartphone soon and plans to be the first company in the world to launch a device in this category. The upcoming Huawei phone is likely to be unveiled at an event in October.
