Samsung this week launched two new smartphones under its foldable Z-series – Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Flip 5. It is rumored that these latest Samsung handsets will be the company’s first foldable lineup, which will come with water as well as dust resistance rating. However, the South Korean company has only added an IPX8 water resistance rating to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, but they are not as dust resistant as their predecessors. In a recent press conference, Samsung’s mobile chief TM Roh said that the company is constantly working on making its foldable phones dust resistant. According to a report by a Korean publication, the Samsung official mentioned that buyers will have to wait a little longer to get this feature on foldable smartphones.
Why dust-proofing the foldable phone is difficult?
As reported by Bizwatch, Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Business Head and President TM Roh said that Samsung is well aware of the demand of users in terms of dust proofing, and hence the company is making various efforts to achieve this. But being foldable, the device has many moving parts, so it is difficult to prevent dust in them. He even pointed out that early foldable smartphones weren’t even water resistant.
Notably, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 lineup (which launched with the foldable phone) is the company’s first S-series tablet, which comes with an IP68 rating. Besides, Samsung’s slab-style flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series of handsets also offers an IP68 rating.
On the other hand, the latest Motorola Razr phones are the only foldable smartphones that offer dust proofing with an IP52 rating. But this IP rating means users will only get splash resistance. But foldable smartphones are expected to come with an IP67 or IP68 rating in the coming days, which will be a big step towards making these devices mainstream smartphones.
Note that Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with a large 3.4-inch cover screen and its price in India starts at Rs 99,999. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a 7.6-inch screen when unfolded, starting at Rs 1,54,999. The pre-orders for both the smartphones have already started.
