Sony may exit the Chinese smartphone market
According to a report by MyDrivers, Sony will not launch its next Xperia smartphone in China. The company’s mobile division may even exit the mainland China market altogether. The exact reason for the move is still unclear, but it could be because Sony’s smartphones are struggling to gain traction in China, much to the company’s dismay.
It should be noted that Sony’s journey into China’s smartphone market began a decade ago with the acquisition of Ericsson’s shares. Although initially successful, Sony found it difficult to keep up with the competition. As a result, the company now manages to hold a small share of the Chinese smartphone market.
While the move away from China is disappointing, Sony’s presence in the mobile industry will not be erased. Sony’s expertise in smartphone camera sensors will still maintain their status as one of the leading manufacturers in the market. However, Sony has yet to officially confirm or deny the news.
