Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) 4G service has finally launched in Kolkata. The new service was launched on Wednesday through Kolkata's Ballygunge Telephone Exchange. According to a report in Statesman, the state-run company will expand its domestic 4G network across West Bengal within the next few months. And Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is playing the role of Tejas Network and System Integrator (SI) to help Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) by providing radio network technology (RAN).
Note that the Government of India ordered BSNL to launch 4G and 5G across the country using indigenous technology. For this they also announced revival package. However, no domestic organization was initially found who could provide the services required by the organization. This is why BSNL's 4G service is so late.
Meanwhile, despite starting the work of setting up 4G sites a long time ago, it is said that BSNL will still need about 2 years to set up 1 lakh 4G sites across the country. So currently very few customers will get the benefit of BSNL 4G network. However, the government agency is already offering several benefits to all its customers including bonus data for SIM upgrade and free 4G SIM to new users.
Incidentally, private companies have started offering 5G services in India since last year. However, as BSNL is still unable to roll out 4G services everywhere, many customers have left their network. So BSNL can get new customers only by providing good service at low cost.
