DoT orders telecom companies to verify more than 6 lakh mobile numbers within 60 days, what's the matter? Will you have problems?
The Department of Telecommunications or DoT has once again taken a major step to protect citizens and Indian mobile users from fraud. Just a few days ago, the Central Department of Telecommunication had ordered to check 20 lakh connections along with 28,000 mobile blocks. As soon as he got angry, they again asked the domestic telecom operators to verify more than 6 lakh mobile connections. According to the government statement yesterday i.e. Thursday, DoT suspects that these numbers are invalid, non-existent and activated using fake documents.
DoT has directed to check those connections within 60 days
The DoT has directed the telecom operators to re-verify the identified mobile numbers within 60 days from now. It is learned that the department is suspicious of about 6.80 lakh mobile connections. They identified links as likely to be fraudulent after advanced AI-based monitoring.
And as I said earlier, DOT considers them illegal because, possibly, millions of these connections are exploited using fake Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA). And so the Department of Telecommunications has directed all Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to check these identified mobile numbers to verify the authenticity of their documents.
This verification is mandatory and has to be completed within 60 days If there is no verification somehow the respective mobile numbers will be disconnected. Incidentally, last April, DOT similarly identified 10,834 suspicious mobile numbers out of which 8,272 connections were disconnected.
