Bajaj CEO Rajeev Bajaj talks about learning from Honda
At the launch event, Rajiv Bajaj (Managing Director of Bajaj Auto) and Nick Bloor (CEO of Triumph Motorcycles) were asked why middleweight motorcycles are gaining so much importance these days. Responding to this question, Rajiv Bajaj said, “We have learned a lot from Honda in the last 30 years. One of the interesting things is listening to customers. Buyers make the market. Our duty is only to respond to the calls of the buyers.”
In response to the same question, Nick said, “The popularity and specialty of the 400-500 cc category is growing globally. So it is quite difficult to generalize based on the market. But while the demand for such motorcycles is low in some markets, the trend is changing in some cases. Drivers in the European and American markets are given the option of choosing a specific brand when it comes to licensing. So while it depends on the market, the excitement in this segment is high right now.”
The Speed 400 set a precedent for its affordable price with over 10,000 bookings within ten days of its debut. The motorcycle is priced at Rs 2.33 lakh (ex-showroom) but there is a discount of Rs 10,000 for the first 10,000 buyers. In that case, Triumph will give you the opportunity to bring the bike home for 2.23 lakh rupees. Meanwhile, Hero MotoCorp and Harley-Davidson recently jointly launched the X440. The price of which has gone from Rs 2.29 lakh to Rs 2.69 lakh (ex-showroom).
Although there are many differences in the characteristics of the two motorcycles. Harley used air cooled engine. Whereas Triumph has offered liquid cooled engine in their bikes. Which is much more modern. Although both the motorcycles have the same torque, the Harley model lags far behind in terms of power output.
