German automaker BMW and its joint venture jointly announced a large number of vehicle recalls. 1.36 million or 13.60 lakh vehicles locally manufactured and imported in China are expected to be affected by the defect. China's market regulator said the cars have defects in Takata airbags. As a result, it can burst at any time.
BMW has ordered a recall of vehicles manufactured between 2003 and 2027. It is learned that BMW Brilliance Automotive, a joint venture in Northeast China, is going to recall 5,98,496 units of the vehicle. On the other hand, BMW Chinese Automobile Trading announced a recall of 7,59,448 vehicles.
If the defect is found after inspection, BMW will replace the driver's front airbag free of charge to reduce the safety risk, the statement said. Vehicles with refitted steering wheels are covered by the recall order, which may contain faulty Takata airbags.
Incidentally, BMW is going to recall 3,94,000 vehicles from the US market for the same reason. Airbags deploy under high pressure when deployed. In July, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a defect in the Takata airbag inflators could pose a risk of serious or fatal injuries.
