Bharat Accumik Nigam Limited i.e. BSNL is yet to launch 4G, yet the company continues to earn substantial amount of money. In fact, BSNL has been leasing its telecom infrastructure to private telecom operators for many years. Through which the company can earn huge amount of money. It may be noted that since FY 2020, BSNL has earned more than Rs 1,000 crore in revenue by leasing their mobile towers. And most of these towers are leased by Reliance Jio.
Basically, telecom companies lease infrastructure from other operators to deliver their services quickly to different areas at low cost. And in the financial year 2024, BSNL earned a total of Tk 1055.80 crore from telecom operators for leasing their infrastructure. Whereas in the 2011 financial year this income was Tk 30.73 crore.
Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Prem Masani Chandrasekhar said that BSNL had 67,340 mobile towers across India as on March 31, 2024, of which private telecom operator Reliance Jio has leased about 8,438 towers.
And Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel have leased 1,568 and 2,415 towers respectively from BSNL. Apart from private telecom companies, the state-run telecom operator has leased 12,502 towers to several other organizations, including the state government police and MTNL.
