Indian Railways has started an initiative to install software “Gajraj Suraksha” to save elephants from being hit by trains while crossing the tracks. We know that railways are the main mode of transport in India.
Reason of implementing Gajraj Suraksha
According to government figures, an average of 20 elephants die every year after being hit by trains. In such a situation, AI-based software will play an important role in the protection of Gajraj elephants. In such a situation, it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Railways to ensure the safety of the railways in every way.
Role of Gajraj Suraksha
Keeping this in mind ‘Gajraj Suraksha’ software has been launched. The Railway Minister said that the Gajraj software works like an armour system and gives advance information to the train driver about the movement of elephants on the railway track. Due to this, the elephants can be prevented from getting hit by the train. When this AI technology senses vibrations caused by elephant movement in its designated area, it will alert the nearest station master through an alarm.
After this, the station master will alert the driver of the passing train. This technology will work with the help of sensors in the OFC line. According to Indian Railways, this artificial intelligence technology will prevent 99.5% of accidents involving elephants. This technology consists of optical fibre cables for fast transfer of set-up signals. That is, it will detect the signal from the vibrations of the elephants and give an alert to the station master accordingly.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that this AI-based system will be deployed in the states of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Kerala and Chhattisgarh in the first phase. According to Railways, this technology will be installed on more than 700 km of railway in these areas.
