The ministry has said “There have been raging concerns on aspects relating to data security and safeguarding the privacy of 130 crore Indians. It has been noted recently that such concerns also pose a threat to sovereignty and security of our country”.
“The Ministry of Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about the misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, it’s mining, and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defense of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” they added.
Order to Google, Apple
“Upon receiving recent credible inputs that such Chinese apps possess a threat to sovereignty and integrity of India, the Government of India has decided to disallow the usage … both [on] mobile and non-mobile Internet-enabled devices,” the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) said in a statement.
According to sources, Meity has issued instructions to Google and Apple to remove the banned applications from their respective application stores. Additionally, telecom operators and Internet service providers will be asked to block access and use of these applications on their networks. Banning these 59 Chinese apps is necessary as recommended by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Sanchit Vir Gogia, the chief analyst and CEO at Greyhound Research, said the ban is simple to implement. “The government just needs to send clear instructions to operators, Internet service providers (ISP), and the application stores i.e Google’s Play Store for Android and Apple’s App Store for iOS,” he said, he also adds, TikTok, Mi Video Call, and Cam Scanner were the three most critical apps among 59 Chinese apps that people use in India.
